Why is it important to honor (or recognize) women who made a difference in Colorado Springs?
Women have made a significant impact on the quality of life and economic vitality of the Pikes Peak Region, yet there is little permanent public recognition of them.
Who is leading this effort to recognize women?
The Makepeace Foundation is dedicated to memorializing and celebrating the women whose leadership, service, and civic engagement have shaped the Pikes Peak Region.
How will women be recognized?
Women who have made transformational contributions to our community, state and world will be recognized with permanent memorials, educational initiatives and public art.
What are the planned projects?
The inaugural project is a life size statue of the first woman mayor of Colorado Springs, Mary Lou Makepeace. The next projects will be a publication telling the stories of the Women Who Made Colorado Springs.
Who is Mary Lou Makepeace?
Mary Lou Makepeace stands as a pivotal leader in Colorado Spring’s history. She championed numerous initiatives that reshaped the city’s landscape and societal fabric, through her service in city offices and leadership in organizations throughout the state and this county. She fervently advocated for civic engagement by everyone, inviting the community into the decision-making process and fostering an environment of inclusivity for all citizens. She was the first and, to date, the only female mayor of Colorado Springs.
What is the timeline for the projects?
Work is currently underway on the inaugural project, the statue of Mayor Mary Lou Makepeace, projected to be installed by mid-2027. The other projects are scheduled to begin next year and continue over the following five to ten years.
Where will we see the projects’ memorials and statues?
The Makepeace statue will be located in Alamo Park, adjacent to the historical site of the Pioneers Museum. The Walk will feature a mix of historical plaques, art installations, statues, and other types of memorials throughout the center of the city and throughout the county, aligned with significant sites these women impacted.
